PETBNB APP DESIGN

BRAND STRATEGY  /  VISUAL DESIGN  /  UX

THE PRODUCT

Petbnb is an app that provides temporary housing for pets while their owners are on vacation or business trips. Petbnb targets

users that are frequently away and do not

have the possibility to leave their pet with relatives and/or friends.

PROJECT DURATION

June 2020 to October 2020

USER RESEARCH: SUMMARY

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through the research was working adults who often go on business trips and vacations and don’t have a place where they can leave their pet(s) for some time.

While this user group confirmed initial assumptions about Petbnb customers, the research also revealed other issues with pet care. For example, people mentioned how difficult it is to leave a pet with people they don't know. Users want to find somebody they can trust and make sure their pet(s) will be safe and sound.

PAIN POINTS
Trust

It is difficult to trust random people to sit with their pets.

Experience

A lot of people often have

no experience how to take care of pets

Time

Working adults with busy schedules and frequent business trips can't spend much time with their pets.

PERSONA: SARA
Problem statement

Sara is a busy marketing specialist who needs an experienced host for her dog while she is on a business trip because she can’t trust and leave her dogs with a random person.

Mapping Sara’s user journey revealed how helpful it would be for users to have access to dedicated Petbnb app.

USER FLOW

I constructed a user flow of what a basic start to finish journey looks like while booking a host. This helps in understanding ways users can interact with the product, as well as allowing us to see navigation through user goals.

PAPER WIREFRAMES

Taking the time to draft iterations to each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements

that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points.

For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy host searching process to help users save time.

DIGITAL WIREFRAMES

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback

and findings from the user research.

Easy navigation was a key user need to address in the designs in addition to equipping the app

to work with assistive technologies.

These buttons at the top of the home screen makes it fast and easy for users to put details.

LOW-FIDELITY PROTOTYPE

The low-fidelity prototype connected

the primary user flow of booking

host, so the prototype could be used in a usability study with users.

ITERATION

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

TAKEAWAYS

While designing the Petbnb app, I learned that the first ideas for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs.
