MAIN TASK
TASK.png

Redesign Wikipedia’s main page having the same content but focusing on navigation, readability, typography and generally more appealing look.

GOAL
GOAL.png

Conduct a research in order to identify problems of Wikipedia’s main page. Address the drawbacks and make the page simpler, more readable and comfortable to browse.

ANALYSIS
Untitled.png

1. The search bar is not visible.

2. The menu is not distinguishable from other content. Consequently, it is hard to find and use.

3. There is not enough space between different blocks. No visible separation.

4. Too many menu items and no clear hierarchy.

5. Too small “welcome” area. Also, the size of the font is too small for H1. Therefore, it is difficult to undertand the main purpose of the site for new users.

6. Too small font size for H2.

7. Pictures are too small.

8. Too much text for the preview.

TYPOGRAPHY

Serif font Frank Ruhl Libre is well suited for headers in this situation. This font is official, readable and neutral.

I chose Open Sans for the main content. This font is readable and matches the header font.

COLORS

The minimalistic style can be found in the color palette.

I decided to choose dark blue to highlight main things.

It is impotant to use neutral colors in such a site.

TAKEAWAYS

While redesigning Wikipedia website, I learned that analysis of the website is one of the most important part of the redesigning process. It is critical to define user pain points in the existing design and create experience that works well for most users.
